Today is a lucky day!!

Today is the 08.08.08. This means it is the 8th day of the 8th month in the year
2008. According to Chinese supersition it is a very lucky day.
Today it is also the first day of the Olympic Games in Beijing. Matthew brought three amazing items to share with us today that are related to the Olympic Games.
Firstly, he brought a collection of five Chinese mascots. Their names are Beibei, Jingjing, Huonhuon, Yingying and Nini. Matthew also had a suitcase with a framed, gold plated picture of the mascots representing all of the sports at the Olympic Games. Finally he also brought along a small Chinese toy complete with jewels!! Alice took the photographs of these special momentos.

VOLCANO

How to use a comma!!

Today we learnt to use a comma to separate groups of words.
These are three examples of sentences the following children have written using commas.
BARAH: I wear black, white, red and blue clothes.
CALLUM: My cat scratches Liam, Hayley, Mum and me.
MAX: When my Dad gets back from Australia he will bring me a KTM motorbike, a surfboard, a hot rod, a rubber chicken and a moose.

Soccer on Friday

Every Friday all the Year 4 children have soccer skills for Friday Sport. We have been practising dribbling the ball with the inside of our foot. We had a series of drills to complete using cones as obstacles. Next week we will have a different set of drills designed to help us pass the ball accurately. In the photographs you can see Tristen and Hamish negotiating the obstacles at speed - great skills!!

Sliding, flipping and turning

Today in Maths we learnt about positional movement of shapes. We had to turn, slide and flip shapes to determine their new position. Some of us also used the laptops to move shapes to form tangrams. We used the Ambleside Primary school website, which has heaps of maths educational games to try. Henry even made his own invention to slide and turn his own shapes!

On Friday we had a "Working Model's" day in our classroom. Many children had made models at home that were brought and shared with the class. We were able to view models of hyrdo-power stations, turbines, farms, water wheels, solar powered cars, slot cars, pulleys, wind propelled baskets, volcanoes......and much more!! So many children had spent a great deal of time and effort creating their models at home and we all had a fabulous time viewing the outcomes of many hours of work.

OUR SUPER TIDY SPORTS SHED

Learning Community 2 are resonsible for the sports shed. Every day a team of us open the sports shed and issue out equipment. Things started to get a bit chaotic in our tiny shed so we decided to have a really good clean up. It took us two days to complete! The sports shed looks very tidy as you can see!

Our solar day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On Tuesday Mrs Jarvis came over to room 2 today to talk to us about solar power and wind power. She had a little motor with little blades.Matthew blew the blades around using a vacuum cleaner. It prodused electricity! Mrs Jarvis plugged the little motor into a solar panel. The blades turned.

Yesterday we talked about electricity. A man named Stuart came to talk to us about it.He worked for the company, Orion .We watched a movie about safety and the rules when around electricity.We learnt alot from the movie. The movie was cool.
After the movie Stuart got the Jacobs Ladder out.It was awesome.The Jacobs Ladder was a machine that had electricity going through it.After the session Stuart gave us some booklets about safety and electricity. We worked through the booklet today.

Buddy Reading with LC9

Today we went to LC9 for buddy reading. It was our first time with our new buddies. Bailey's buddy was Sarah and Briar's buddy was Casey. It was fun reading with new children. We shared our readers and our new inquiry books about electricity. Then we came back to Room 2 to do poetry about yummy lunches.

Tristen's wonderful collection!

Thurday 13 th of March .Tristen brought an amazing collection of animals to school. There are snakes, turtles, spiders and frogs. They are made of plastic. Tristen loves to collect animals and insects and she stores them under her bed in her bedroom! Tristen also loves birds and lizards. Her favourite bird is a fantail.

THE Busiest Day Ever!

Today was the first day that we all got our diary signed! We are going to the library today. The Cool Kiwis reached 100 points! We are learning how to write friendly letters. The Red Roosters did lots of basic facts. Lots of children from our class did 'Sports For Kids'. We started NIE.

Jack bought something very special to school today. On the weekend he won a medal for motor bike racing. He got first place!!! He was so proud of himself. All of us in LC2 are very proud of him too!

The last day of swimming

We learnt how to play the recorder. We now know how to play hot cross buns, old macdonald and London's burning. It is the last day of swimming in the freezing pool. We are up to chapter 11 in the Narnia serial. We just had school assembly.Grace and Shane got a certificate.

First Day of Everything

Today was our first day of scripture. We had fun doing our first star test. All of us had a smartwords test. BrockHanham-Cater shared his scarey news to the class. After smartwords test we talked about keeping our self safe. Mrs Quinn read us a story. Hopefully we can go swimming.
On Friday Hamish is going to Rotorua and Gisbone. He isnt coming back for a whole week.
We are going to miss him heaps. We hope you have fun looking at our blog.

A Busy Day At School.

Today is Tuesday the 4 th of March.

Affter morning tea we read a book called the Lion ,the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S Lewis. We are up to chapter ten. It is a great book.

We are going to the Library to get new Library books. This is our second time.

Today is Kowhai's swimming day. Kowhai is yellow house. But it is a cloudyy and cold day for a swim day.

Today in LC2 we were busy, busy, busy as per usual!!
Firstly, a pupil from our room demonstrated that practise does indeed make perfect - she perfected "Hot Cross Buns" on the recorder after just one night of frantic practising!!
We also had Constable Meg visit us and talk about Keeping Ourselves Safe.
Now we are part of the Moa team we have more responsibilities. One of these is being in charge of the Sports Shed during Long Play.

We finished the day with a windy game of Rob the Nest. We had to see how many 'eggs' (bean bags) we could get in our 'nests' (hula hoops).

Phew! After all that activity, isn' it great it is the weekend!!

Remarkable Recorder!!!

Easter came early to Learning Community 2 on Thursday as we all learnt to play "Hot Cross Buns" on the recorder!! You need to play three different notes to play this tune - B,A and G. Hey, that spells BAG!! You can click on two of the pictures to hear our first attempts - remember, practise does make perfect!! We will keep on practising next Thursday!

What's inside a DVD machine?

One of the boys in our class bought something very interesting to share with the class. Their DVD machine broke down at home. He decided to investigate what was inside a DVD machine.
It was surprising to see that the DVD machine was quite simple inside! We have the pieces in our room. I wonder what a computer looks inside?

Yesterday we finally got our sports shed roster up and running. Things were very very busy in the sports shed at long play. Heaps of people asked for dodge balls and hoola hoops. Dodge ball is very popular at our school at the moment. It was really tricky getting the skipping ropes out. We think we need a new system to keep the ropes nice and tidy. We shared our recount writing on the data projector. It was good to look at our work and make changes. We found out what maths teams we are in and started our maths learning. We used the hundreds boards to add and subtract groups of tens, move backwards, forwards and down on the board.
We had an awesome day.

Tuesday 26th February. Our Second Blog!

Yesterday, we did ICT. We had a look at Hectors World. We learned that you shouldn't give information about yourself when on the Internet because your computer could get a virus.
Today we are finally starting our sports shed roster! We are looking forward to becoming 'Sports Shed Monitors'. Today will be our first visit to the school library.

Hi and welcome to our first blog entry.
We are from Learning Community 2 at West Melton School. There are 16 boys and 12 girls in our class. One of the girls in our class is presently in Ukrain. We are year 4's and this is our first year in the MOA Team! We have two teachers in our class. They are Mrs Quinn and Mrs Haywood. We are a good team. Last week we painted wonderful colourful pictures of Maui and The Sun. This is our very first ICT day and we have the laptops for the whole day! We have been exploring our school's website and looking at all the fabulous blog sites. ICT is really really fun. We hope you enjoy reading our blogsite.
